WINTER FESTIVAL 2018
January 26 – February 4, 2018

HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO... to fit in?

This winter, The Young Company introduces our students and audiences to people who have felt like outsiders, and what amazing adventures we all go through to feel accepted.

In family favorite The Phantom Tollbooth Jr, Milo journeys through the Kingdom of Wisdom to find his purpose.
In the classic Seussical, Horton and Jojo  search through the Jungle of Nool and Who to feel less alone in the universe.
In the Disney Classic, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Quasimodo longs to leave his bell tower and be “Out There!”
In the dark comedy Bat Boy: The Musical, Edgar looks for acceptance and the ability to safely walk among his peers.
This audition-based program for students in grades 1-12 culminates in performances on Greater Boston Stage Company’s stage. Anyone can audition, and free workshops prepare seasoned actors and newbies alike!

Winter Festival Tuition: $415

AUDITION SIGN-UPS: beginning October 2, 2017

To register for an audition slot or audition workshop you must call the Education Department at 781-279-7885 x104. We will be accepting calls from Monday to Friday between 11am and 5pm.

AUDITION WORKSHOP: Sunday, October 22, 2017 (OPTIONAL)
We offer free optional audition workshops a week before Winter Festival auditions are held. In these, our Winter Festival creative teams provide audition materials and teach best audition practices to help actors prepare to show their best selves. Priority for a spot in these workshops will be given to new students.

AUDITIONS: Saturday, October 28 - Monday October 30, 2017
During auditions, students will be seen by the creative teams for all shows for which they are age-eligible. They are as follows:
The Phantom Tollbooth Jr: overture and act 1
Seussical: act 1 and act 2
The Hunchback of Notre Dame: act 2 and act 3
Batboy: act 3

Each audition has two sections.
  • The first section is a 5-minute private slot in which the student showcases both a 45-second monologue and a 16-bar cut of a song. Students should bring the sheet music for their song.
  • The second section is a 25-minute group dance slot in which a brief combination is taught and performed.

CALLBACKS: Thursday, November 1 – Friday, November 2, 2017
Each show has a separate callback. Students will be notified as to which callback(s) they should attend once all initial auditions are complete. Callbacks are a time for creative teams to gather information they may not have gathered at auditions. If you do not receive a callback for a specific show, you may still receive a role.

CASTING: Monday, November 6, 2017
In casting, we take several things into account:

1.      Information we’ve gathered during auditions and callbacks.
2.      The technical requirements of each role.
3.      The learning goals for each actor (how this young performer can grow).
4.      Rehearsal and performance conflicts.***
5.      Attitude towards staff, fellow actors, and the space.

***Conflicts: Please bring ALL conflicts to your audition day.  A student’s conflicts will play a role in their ability to be a part of a cast. Small conflicts may be honored at the discretion of the creative teams, but any additional conflicts presented after casting may result in dismissal from the show.

At the end of the casting process, we place students in whichever production and role best suits the artistic and educational needs of the program and the student.

Please note: Not every student who auditions will be cast. Also, roles will not be double-cast.

FEEDBACK AND REGISTRATION: Monday, November 6 – Wednesday, November 8, 2017
To help answer questions about casting, we send home an audition feedback form reflecting what we saw on both the initial audition day and at callbacks that helped inform our decisions.

All students who are cast will also receive a casting form that includes:

1.      How we think this role will take advantage of what each individual has to offer.
2.      How this role will help each actor develop specific skills to grow to their fullest potential.

Students who are cast will have until 5:00pm on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 to accept their role and pay the tuition in full or request financial aid.
