SUMMER FESTIVAL 2021 UPDATES

Hello Friends,

This page will constantly be updated to keep you best informed of our most current plans for Summer Festival 2021. Because of the evolving situation with COVID please note that things are very likely to change.

Summer Festival 2021 will be in person. How Exciting!

We have missed seeing you all very dearly and after monitoring the vaccine rollout alongside the precautions our local schools and theatres are taking to safely resume theatre education in person, we look forward to opening our doors again as well.

We will be consistently monitoring all aspects of this decision and will keep you updated immediately if anything changes. Any student who is previously registered will be alerted on updates via email and this page will be updated accordingly.

Speaking of changes, in order to safely resume our programming, there will be significant changes that will be outlined below. These changes, however, will not interfere with the amazing work we plan to continue to do following our mission that Good Theatre Makes Good People.

More info on the mission and vision of each program artistically and educationally can be found HERE

SUMMER FESTIVAL INFORMATION SESSION
Please join us for our Summer Festival Information Meeting on Monday, March 15 from 5:00pm to 6:30pm.

Director of Education, Tyler Rosati, will talk about Summer Festival 2021, our Safety Plan, how 2021 will compare to previous festivals, Financial Aid, and more. And he will be sure to leave time for any questions or concerns you may have.

ENROLLMENT
Space will be extremely limited for Summer Festival 2021. This will ensure ample space for students during rehearsals and more focused attention on those students. All enrollment is first-come first served. We will consider you “enrolled” once we have received your full registration and payment OR your financial aid paperwork and deposit.  More information on how the registration process will look below under "Registration Begins."

If we can safely increase our program sizes, students will be pulled from a waiting list in order of when we received the full registration information. In the highly unlikely event that we would need to reduce the number of students we have registered we will go backwards from the time of receiving registration information.

All students, regardless of the amount of financial aid requested, will be treated as equals regarding program spots. Timing of receiving enrollment will be the only factor.

OVERTURE: 10 Students per week.
Act 1: 15 Students.
Act 2: 15 Students.
Act 3: 24 Students.
ASM: 2 Students

TUITION AND FINANCIAL AID

Act 1: $1300
Act 2: $1300
Act 3: $1300
ASM: $1000

We aim to remove financial barriers to participation. Each year, Greater Boston Stage Company’s generous donors contribute to our Fund-A-Need program, which supports financial aid for students in The Young Company. While gifts typically range from 30% to 50%, more substantial aid can be given in specific circumstances. Given the extraordinary circumstances of the last year, we are prepared for both an increase in individual aid requests and an increase in the amount requested. Please do not hesitate to utilize this program to help support you as you support your student.

SHOWS AND PERFORMANCES
Act 1, Act 2, and Act 3

Like all Summer Festivals, we will be working towards performances. Unlike previous years, due to safety concerns, all our pieces this year will be plays rather than including some musicals. These dynamic and ensemble-focused plays will offer a fun unique challenge for all students and will incorporate music, movement, and fun theatrical magic.

Act 1: A Wrinkle in Time by Morgan Gould
Act 2: Peter and the Starcatcher by Rick Elice
Act 3: Puffs by Matt Cox
Act 3: The Sparrow by Chris Matthews, Jake Minton, and Nathan Allen
NOTE: All titles are subject to change.

It is our current plan that all pieces will be performed on our stage at GBSC including a full set, lights, costumes and props. We are currently working on a plan to safely have a very limited number of audience members attend performances. We believe it is highly likely that most patrons will only be able to view performances virtually. If we are unable to have any live audience, all performances will be streamed live at the allotted times. No recordings of these performances will be made available. In the unlikely event that live performances in the theatre are not possible, performances may occur via zoom from student’s homes.

Overture
Each week our students will work with our staff to create their own individualized character and theatre piece that will be shared on Friday. A weekly theme, dance style, and craft will help guide the students along creating and staging their original play!

Week 1 (7/5 to 7/9): Carnival Calamity, Hip-Hop, and Puppets
Week 2 (7/12 to 7/16): Bright Lights and the Big City, Musical Theatre Dance, Props
Week 3 (7/19 to 7/23): Wander Through Wonderland, Jazz, Set Design
Week 4 (7/26 to 7/30): Under the Sea, Tap, Costumes
Week 5 (8/2 to 8/6): Space Exploration, Disco, Mask-Making

GBSC SHOW CHOIR  AND WORKSHOPS
For Act 1, Act 2, and Act 3, Summer Festival 2021 will continue our workshop series that looks to introduce students to a myriad of different art topics, styles, conversations, and techniques that extend beyond the bounds of just theatre. Each student will take 4 workshops, that will each be comprised of 5 separate classes. Workshops will be comprised of the same students and creative team members in each cast to prevent crossover between groups.

In addition, there will be an hour-long slot reserved for a GBSC show choir each day. These rehearsals will take place outside to allow students to safely spread out and sing at full voice. This opportunity will allow students to continue to build their vocal technique, harmonizing skills, and vocal confidence while keeping everyone as safe as possible.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
We have a separate page dedicated to our Summer Festival 2021 Safety Plan which you can access HERE.

The Safety Plan outlines the precautions and protocols to ensure the Summer Festival 2021 occurs with minimal risks to students and staff.  It is imperative to us that all staff and students follow each step of the precautions and protocols outlined to ensure the safety of all involved.

All measures are compliant with the CDC guidelines and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and cross references plans implemented by other successful theatrical institutions.

Guidelines are ever changing, and this plan will be continually updated as more information is obtained to create a plan that reflects the best current practices.

REGISTRATION
All registrations will be open on March 22, 2021 at 1:00pm. All Summer Festival registrations are first-come, first served.

Registration will include agreeing to all safety precautions and an acknowledgement of risks associated with in-person programming. While all the final details will not be in place for Summer Festival 2021 at this time, it gives us a chance to see how much interest there is in this programming and allows us time to adjust accordingly.

We are choosing a specific date for a few reasons:

1) We want all families to have ample opportunity to gather financial aid information prior to registration opening to give all an equal opportunity to receive a slot.

2) We hope you use this time prior to registration opening to look over all of our materials and make sure you and your student feel comfortable participating in Summer Festival 2021 fully.

As we expect a large turnout of registrations to be submitted right at the opening on March 22, 2021, we have streamlined the registration process to give all families an equitable chance at receiving a slot if we were to receive more registrations than we currently have slots.

REGISTRATION PROCESS
In order to be included in the first wave of applicants, all families MUST submit a registration form.
Forms will be considered on a first-come first-served beginning on Monday March 22, 2021 at 1:00pm.
Forms received prior to 1pm on March 22 will be moved to the back of the line.

Forms can be submitted two ways:
  • Scanned and submitted VIA email to education@greaterbostonstage.org
  • Brought to the Box Office on:
    • Monday, March 22, from 1pm to 6pm
    • Tuesday, March 23 from 10am to 6pm
  • Families will then have until Tuesday, March 23 at 6pm to submit their payment information.
    • Payment information can be submitted in three ways:
      • Credit Card Number written on the initial Registration Form
      • Check brought to Box Office (same hours as above)
      • Credit Card Number called in to the Box Office (same hours as above)
  • If families are applying for Financial Aid or submitting a Payment Plan, they must also submit those forms and accompanying materials at the same time as the Registration Form.
  • Starting early Tuesday, March 23 the staff at GBSC will go through all registration forms in the order submitted and begin processing payments, confirming with families that they have a slot. In the unfortunate event that we run out of slots before processing all registrations, that payment will NOT be process and that family will be contacted and placed on the waitlist.

If spaces remain available once we have passed this initial phase of registrations, all online ordering will open. Families can then register online, through calling our Box Office, or through submitting their forms through e-mail or mail.

We thank you in advance for your patience as we work through making sure we properly organize all registrations!

CHANGES AND REFUNDS

As always, everything is subject to change. This is our hope for programming at the current date. We do want to acknowledge that growing cases may results in Summer Festival 2021 shifting online, either before or during the start of the program itself.

If any change prior to the programming starting result in you wishing to rescind your registration, then a full refund will be given.  Once the program starts however, the tuition does become non-refundable as it is used to pay the artists we have already hired and who have begun their work.

ONLINE SUMMER ALTERNATIVE

We do believe it is extremely important to acknowledge that many students and families are in situations that would prevent them from safely or confidently participating in in-person programming. After the incredible success of our Winter Festival online performances, we are working to adapt some online programming for Summer Festival 2021 that will allow students to participate virtually. This will include overlap with the same workshops taken by the in-person students as a sort of hybrid model.

We are still working on this as an alternative for some families. Please do reach out if this is of interest to you and your student.
