SUMMER FESTIVAL DETAILS

Space Available

Rising Stars (students entering grades 1-3)

The Rising Stars program uses different weekly themes to introduce our youngest performers to acting, dancing, singing, and design in a fun and supportive environment! Each day, students are exposed to various theatrical techniques, exercises, and games to expand their confidence and imagination.

Using these developed skills, students work with our staff to create their own individualized characters and an original play. The play, combined with a dance and song, is rehearsed, and then shared for friends and family on Friday.

Space Available

Act 1 (students entering grades 4-6)

From the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.  Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him.  Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

Space Available

Act 2 (students entering grades 7-9)

It’s the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations and look forward to the new year. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical that is being led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the “status quo,” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.

Space Available

Act 3 (students entering grades 10-12 & ’24 grads)

SIX: The Musical
Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived.
From Tudor Queens to Pop Icons, the SIX wives of Henry VIII take the mic to remix five hundred years of historical heartbreak into a Euphoric Celebration of 21st-century girl power!

Once Upon A Mattress
Many moons ago in a far-off place, Queen Aggravain decreed no couples could marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, found a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is, until the “shy” swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, showed up. Would she be able to pass the Sensitivity Test, marry her prince and help Lady Larken and Sir Harry to the altar?

AUDITIONS & CASTING PROCESS

In Acts 1 and 2, and our Act 3 Guaranteed Casting (GC) program, all registered students will be included in a summer festival production. Act 1 Seussical Jr. (Gr. 4-6) and Act 2 High School Musical (Gr. 7-9) host their auditions on the first day of the festival on July 8th.

Act 3 (gr. 9-12, rising college freshmen) will audition in advance of the festival for their role placement within one of our two titles, Six: Teen Edition and Once Upon a Mattress. With our new Act 3 Audition Based (AB) option, students will audition at the beginning of June for placement in one of our Act 3 Titles.

All Act 3 students will be auditioning early June.

If you have chosen the Guaranteed Casting option, you will be guaranteed placement in one of the two Act 3 productions.

If you have chosen the Audition-Based Casting option and are only interested in one Act 3 title, you will have the option to select that title, but you will not be guaranteed placement in that show. Auditioning for both titles increases the likelihood of placement within the festival. In the event that you are not cast or decline the role that you are offered, your Audition Deposit is non-refundable.

Any Act 1 or Act 2 actor who has never auditioned before will be provided the opportunity on day one to go over the audition material. Audition information will be provided to all registered families closer to the start of the festival.

In casting, we take several things into account:

  1. Information we’ve gathered during auditions and callbacks.
  2. The technical requirements of each role.
  3. The learning goals for each actor and how this young performer can grow.
  4. Rehearsal and performance conflicts.
  5. Attitude towards staff, fellow actors, and the space.

At the end of the casting process, we place students in whichever production and role best suits the artistic and educational needs of the program and the student. This is then clearly communicated with families through a casting form that explores the experience and growth we hope to offer your actor.

Our full philosophy and casting announcement policy is available upon request. All families who register will receive this information.

REHEARSALS & WORKSHOPS

Curved Line

Our regular program begins promptly at 8:30am and ends at 2:30pm. To accommodate families’ schedules, students may be dropped off as early as 8:10am and can be picked up no later than 2:45pm.

In rehearsals, actors work with an artistic team that includes a Director, Music Director, Choreographer and Stage Manager. Students are actively engaged to the fullest, learning material for the shows and important skills useful for both artistic advancement and personal achievement.

In addition to rehearsals, students participate in weekly workshops in various theatre disciplines during each of the first 4 weeks of the program. Workshops are designed to further develop actors’ skills in acting, singing, and dancing and are useful not just for the show they are cast in, but for any show they may one day participate in.

AFTERCARE

Curved Line

For an additional fee, students in Overture, Act 1, and Act 2 may enroll in our aftercare program on a weekly basis for pick up as late as 5:00pm at Greater Boston Stage Company. The Aftercare staff run a variety of theatre games and crafting activities. More information regarding Aftercare and registration will be announced at a later date.
