The Young Company offers half-hour private voice lessons with professional and engaging coaches.  Throughout these lessons, students explore vocal technique, musicianship, song repertoire, and audition skills. Lesson curriculum and song selection are developed between student and instructor and tailored to the students’ specific goals. These lessons are a great fit for beginner singers as well as experienced vocalists looking to expand their skill set and experience. We welcome students in grades 1-12 as well as adults, and offer opportunities to meet both in-person and online.

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS

JULIA NELSON
In-Person Mondays 3:30-7:00pm all ages

Julia Nelson is an accomplished theatre arts educator, actor, and musician with over ten years of teaching experience in various disciplines. She has previously served as a vocal performance coach, theatre teacher, and music director for Greater Boston Stage Company’s Young Company and was appointed Director of Education in 2021. She holds a degree in music from the University of Massachusetts and has pursued additional certifications and training from such institutions as The New England Conservatory, the Crittenden Opera Studio, and the Salzburg Institute for Religion, Culture, and the Arts. Her students are actively competitive performers who have achieved distinction in prestigious competitions, including those sponsored by the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, the American Association of Christian Schools, and Classical Singer Magazine. She is very proud to see her current and former students performing in both amateur and professional theatrical productions and select vocal ensembles throughout the greater Boston area, including at the Reagle Music Theatre, in the Boston Symphony Children’s Chorus, and of course here at Greater Boston Stage Company.

JEANNE LAFORGIA
Online Tuesdays & Thursdays 7:00-9:00pm all ages

Jeanne LaForgia has been a vocal instructor at GBSC since 2008 where she enjoys teaching healthy vocal technique and the joy of singing. Previously, she was head of Performing Arts at Boston University Academy where she taught voice and directed all high school musical and dramatic productions. A soprano, Jeanne has sung leading musical theater and opera roles on numerous stages including Aspen Music Center and Scullers Jazz Club. Jeanne performed and taught at the Tanglewood Institute and Music Center for many summers. She received the Excellence in Teaching Award from Harvard Club of Boston and directed the youth program for Boston Lyric Opera. Jeanne is a graduate of Dartmouth College (BA Drama and English) and Boston University (MM Vocal Performance) where she was mentored by Metropolitan Opera soprano Phyllis Curtin and sang at the BU Opera Institute at Huntington Theatre. She has also studied at Moscow Art Theater School of Harvard and Manhattan School of Music. Jeanne’s students have gone on to the top performing arts colleges in the nation and successful musical theater careers.

LEA PETERSON
In-Person Tuesdays 3:30-7:00pm 9th grade-adult

Lea Peterson is a Boston-based singer, music director, vocal arranger, and voice teacher. As a classically trained mezzo-soprano Lea has an active soloist and ensemble career singing opera and art song, musical theatre, pop, funk, and post-tonal pieces/new compositions. Lea holds a Masters in Vocal Performance from Longy School of Music of Bard College, and her experience as a singer, alongside her deep knowledge of vocal technique and ensemble singing, makes her a sought-after private voice coach, teaching artist, and conductor. As a private teacher Lea maintains a voice studio in Somerville where she teaches students of all ages and abilities. As a director and conductor Lea is currently the Choir Director at Boston Latin Academy and has worked at The Winsor School, The Performing Arts Connection, Roxbury Latin, Boston Children’s Theatre, and many other excellent arts education organizations in and around Boston. Lea cherishes the opportunity to work with young singers and encourage students to find pleasure in the hard work of honing their skills.

CARRIE TULLY
In-Person Sundays 9:00am-12:00pm all ages

Carrie Tully is a Boston-based actor, singer, and teacher. She is currently completing her final year at Emerson College, earning her BFA in Musical Theatre. Carrie is an alumnus of The Young Company, having first joined as a sophomore in high school in 2017. The Young Company was integral to the development of her skills and confidence as a professional theatre artist, and she is so thrilled to step into the shoes of the educators that impacted her so much growing up. In addition to her extensive training in classical singing, she’s spent the past 6+ years studying and teaching pop and jazz vocal pedagogy.
