FAQs

Yes! We welcome students of all different experience and skill levels to participate in our programming!

Students entering Grades 1-4 in Fall 2026 participate in 2-week sessions culminating in a sharing performance of an original short musical.

For students entering Grades 4-12 in Fall 2026 & 2026 high school graduates, The Young Company Summer Festival is a 5-week long program where students rehearse and perform a fully produced musical on the GBSC stage!

2-week sessions for students in Grades 1-4 are July 6-17 and July 20-31 from 8:30am-2:30pm. A final sharing-style performance is scheduled for the final Friday of each session.

This program runs July 6 – August 9 for students in Act 3 and July 13 – August 16 for students in Acts 1 & 2. During the first 4 weeks the students rehearse from 8:30am-2:30pm at a local school. The final week of the program moves to Greater Boston Stage Company where the schedule changes to include weekend rehearsals, technical rehearsals and 3 public performances of each title for family and friends to attend!

All students registered are guaranteed placement in a Summer Festival production. Auditions
for each show will take place on the first day of the festival (July 6 or July 13). Audition information will be provided to all registered families closer to the start of the festival.

In casting, we take several things into account:
1. Information we have gathered during auditions and callbacks.
2. The technical requirements of each role.
3. The learning goals of each actor and how this young performer can grow.
4. Rehearsal and performance conflicts.
5. Attitude towards staff, fellow actors, and the space.

At the end of the casting process, we place students in the role that best suits the artistic and
educational needs of the production and student. This is clearly communicated with families
through a casting form that explores the experience and growth we hope to offer each actor.

Our full philosophy and casting announcement policy is available upon request. All families who
register will receive this information.

Students are actively engaged in acting, vocal and dancing rehearsals for most of the day, learning material for the shows and important skills useful for both artistic advancement and personal
achievement.

In addition to rehearsals, students participate in weekly workshops in various theatre disciplines
during each of the first 4 weeks of the program. Workshops are designed to further develop
actors’ skills in acting, dancing, and singing – useful not only for their current Summer Festival
production, but for future shows as well.

Yes! We believe all students should have access to the arts, which is why we have never turned a student away from our programming for financial reasons. Any family can apply for financial aid through our Fund-A-Need program.

Each Summer Fest show team consists of four teaching artists: a director, choreographer, music director, and stage manager. This team will be present at every rehearsal. Closer to tech rehearsals, your student will meet other artists working on the Festival, including a costume designer, lighting designer, props designer, scenic designer, and production manager. To ensure we are keeping with our Young Company mission of developing the next generation of artists through pre-professional training, all our teaching artists are working professionals in the field.
