Is your child interested in acting? Or maybe they are shy and you’re looking for a way to boost their confidence. Today, I’m interviewing Beth Hampson, a Melrose mom of 3, about her family’s experience with The Young Company in Stoneham. The Young Company is Greater Boston Stage Company’s year-round theatre education program for students in grades 1-12, offering artistic training and performance opportunities in a professional setting.
Where are you from originally and what town do you live in now? I grew up in Connecticut right outside NYC. I Moved to the Boston area in 1997, for Graduate School and I have lived in Melrose since 2005.
How many children do you have and what are their age(s)? I have three children – a daughter who is 12 and in 6th grade and twin boys who are 10 and in 4th grade.
What do you love most about living in the North Shore area? I love the easy access to Boston, the many great arts and cultural opportunities on the North Shore and the green spaces such as the Fells, Ipswich Wildlife Sanctuary, Plum Island and Wingaersheek Beach.
How did your family first become involved in The Young Company? Our first experience with The Young Company was seeing a family friend perform in a Summer Festival production of the Little Mermaid when my daughter was in pre-k. The summer before 4th grade she was in the ACT 1 Summer Festival production of Freckleface Strawberry.
What productions have they been a part of over the years? Since then she has participated in both Winter and Summer Festivals and has been in the casts of Frozen Jr., the virtual production of The Phantom Tollbooth, and last summer her brothers joined her in A Wrinkle in Time, and again this winter in The Many Disguises of Robin Hood.
Who do you feel would be a good fit for the program? The Young Company is incredibly inclusive and honestly it would be a good fit for any child interested in being on stage! The education department does an excellent job of making their program accessible for all types of learners. It is also great for students who have a serious interest in theater. There are wonderful opportunities to learn and grow as an artist through the many program offerings.
What have your kids learned from being a part of theatre classes? They have gained confidence. They have met and made some of their best friends. They have learned how to collaborate and compromise. They have felt the joy of being a part of a cast and the strong relational bond that is created when actors come together to tell a story on stage. They are more accepting, kind, and inclusive of others because of their experience with The Young Company. And they have improved their memorization skills, developed language and literacy skills, improved their projection and articulation, learned about stage direction and theater etiquette, learned about dance, drumming, prop-making, and developed social and emotional skills.
For my daughter, who is quite serious about theater she has learned skills and techniques that have helped improve her acting, singing and dance. She has grown so much as an actor through The Young Company classes and productions.
Advice for parents considering having their students join The Young Company? Do it! If your child is interested in theater and developing their skills; If your child is shy and needs to build confidence; If your child needs to work on language and literacy skills; If your child needs to improve their social skills; If your child is super social, likes to ham it up and needs an outlet for their drama…they will love this program.

Originating from the French lilac plant, this compound medication stands out due to its effectiveness and well-documented safety profile. Many women experience more regular periods and improved fertility after starting metformin treatment, offering hope for those struggling to conceive. Furthermore, its role in weight management and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) treatment has brought new hope to those grappling with these challenging conditions, illustrating its multifaceted nature. Research studies have indicated that metformin may have neuroprotective properties, protecting brain cells from damage and helping to improve cognitive abilities. Intriguingly, studies have pointed to metformin's potential in reducing the risk of certain cancers, notably breast and colon cancer, by inhibiting cancer cell growth and metastasis. There are various approaches to diabetes treatment, with the two most common being metformin and insulin. As it enhances insulin sensitivity, it can prompt the body to use fat as an energy source, promoting fat loss over muscle loss.
Metformin works by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing blood glucose levels, so it is important to prioritize whole foods, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates while limiting the intake of sugary and processed foods. Initial trials indicated that this compound medication could assist in weight reduction, especially among individuals with Type 2 diabetes. Follow the prescribed dosage: It is crucial to take metformin as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The conjunction of metformin therapy with regular exercise may be likened to a coordinated dance battling diabetes more effectively than either could alone. Metformin, a widely prescribed medication for individuals with PCOS, has shown remarkable efficacy in managing weight and insulin resistance. Understanding these processes provides insight into how metformin can be a useful tool beyond diabetes care. Overall, the lifestyle impact of metformin is generally less restrictive, allowing individuals to continue their daily routines and activities with minimal interruption.
Improving Fertility and Hormonal Health with Metformin
Research conducted on animal models suggests that metformin can improve cognitive performance and memory consolidation. It provides a line of defense by acting directly within the cellular metabolism, a strategy that differs fundamentally from dietary and lifestyle measures which only reduce risk factors incidentally. Metformin’s mark on medicine extended far beyond its initial role in diabetes management, signaling the dawn of a new era in therapeutic applications. One study highlights its potential in anti-aging, showing how this staple in diabetes treatment might extend lifespan. This has broader implications for hormonal health, as it may aid in the management of conditions exacerbated by insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia. By enhancing insulin sensitivity, metformin helps muscles use glucose more effectively for energy, rather than storing it as fat. Metformin, a 'script frequently prescribed, has become a cornerstone in diabetes management.
Can Metformin Alone Lead to Significant Weight Loss?
Metformin, originally derived from the French lilac plant, has a fascinating history that dates back to the 1920s. John's story highlights the potential benefits of metformin for individuals with diabetes, showcasing how it can contribute to both blood sugar management and weight loss. Unlike some other meds, Metformin does not induce a significant drop in blood sugar, minimizing the risk of hypoglycemia. It does this by suppressing the hunger hormone ghrelin and increasing feelings of fullness. Additionally, metformin reduces the production of glucose in the liver, thereby decreasing the overall amount of sugar circulating in the bloodstream. One of the main reasons metformin is effective for PCOS is its ability to improve insulin sensitivity. 2.
Personalized Approach: Tailoring Metformin's Benefits to Individual Needs
Numerous studies suggest that metformin can contribute to weight loss or prevent weight gain in individuals with diabetes or those at high risk of developing the condition. The doses should be taken at the same time every day to maintain consistent blood sugar control. Metformin has garnered significant attention for its potential anti-aging effects, particularly in relation to cellular aging and longevity pathways. It's critical for individuals on Metformin to understand the difference between common side effects and serious reactions that necessitate stopping the medication and seeking immediate medical care. If the results are positive, metformin may not only be prescribed for diabetes management but also for promoting healthy aging and increasing lifespan. Through these mechanisms, metformin provides a promising avenue for targeting age-related decline and promoting healthy aging. Physicians typically emphasize that while metformin can kickstart and support weight reduction efforts, sustaining these outcomes hinges on the individual’s commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
The Impact of Alcohol and Lifestyle on Metformin Efficacy
By unlocking this hidden potential, metformin could offer new avenues for improving brain health and preserving cognitive abilities as we age. Moreover, the regulation of insulin can lead to a decrease in androgen levels, which are often elevated in PCos, contributing to the restoration of normal menstrual cycles. While further research is needed, metformin's potential benefits for overall health demonstrate the importance of exploring its multifaceted effects beyond diabetes management. It is important to be aware of these potential side effects to make an informed decision about whether metformin is the right choice for you. These changes contribute to better glycemic control in diabetic patients, supporting its primary use. Herbalists of yore discerned that this plant could alleviate symptoms of what we now identify as diabetes. Metformin is widely recognized for its ability to manage blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes, acting primarily by suppressing liver glucose production and increasing insulin sensitivity.
Future Possibilities and Ongoing Studies
Water aids in digestion and absorption, helping to maintain a smoother digestive process. These multifaceted mechanisms illustrate why Metformin is increasingly viewed as more than just a diabetes medication. However, in recent years, there has been growing evidence suggesting that metformin may also be effective in promoting weight loss. Women with PCOS facing the challenges of infertility may find an ally in Metformin, as research continues to unveil its potential beyond glucose control. Additionally, metformin has been found to suppress appetite, making it easier for individuals to stick to a balanced and healthy diet. When combined with healthy lifestyle choices, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, metformin can be a valuable tool in managing diabetes in the long term.
